Dupuytren’s contracture, also known as palmar fibromatosis, is an uncommon condition that causes connective tissue in your palm to thicken and take on a knot-like texture. As the tissue gradually thickens, it forces fingers to curl inward toward the palm. While this condition isn’t necessarily painful, it does greatly limit the use of your hand. Typically, the thumb and index finger aren’t affected, so most people retain the ability to grasp smaller objects.
If you are experiencing decreased dexterity or range of motion in your hands, the experts at the Hand and Shoulder Center are here to help with personalized treatment.
By feeling your hand and having you lay your hand flat on a table, we can easily determine whether you’re suffering from this genetic disease. If a diagnosis of a contracture is made, treatment options will be discussed with you to determine the best path for your goals.
For Dupuytren’s contracture, we may use corticosteroid injections to help with discomfort and to slow progression. However, as the condition worsens, we may employ more complex treatment methods.
One such treatment option available at the Hand and Shoulder Center is a collagenase injection and manipulation. This treatment can be performed in the office. The enzyme used in the injection breaks down the collagen within the affected tissue. The fingers are then manipulated under local anesthetic, and a splint is applied for a few months.
If the contracture is severe enough, open surgical debridement may be necessary to take out contracting veins.
